General-purpose AI assistants answer questions, draft and summarise text, help plan work and, increasingly, read files, browse the web or run small tasks for you. They are often the first AI tool people try, and the one they use most days.
Because they cover so much ground, the differences between them are easy to miss. Some are strongest at long documents, some at reasoning or coding, some at working inside the apps you already use. The right choice depends less on which is "best" and more on the work you do every week.
A practical way to choose is to try two or three assistants on the same real task, such as summarising a document you know well, and compare the results. Check any facts an assistant gives you before relying on them, especially numbers, names and dates.
Anyone who writes, researches, plans or answers questions as part of their day: students, freelancers, office teams and managers.
On ToolIndexHub, each listing shows the pricing model, free plan, platforms and API access that we have recorded, and when an editor last checked them. Where a fact has not been checked yet, the page says so rather than guessing.
